2AM Truck Stop

Road Trip

When you play 2AM Truck Stop, tell ’em Large Marge sent ya.

By Anthony John Agnello • April 30, 2012

2AM Truck Stop is made extra-delightful if it’s played while pretending that your trucker is actually the bad guy from Jonathan Mostow’s 1997 thriller Breakdown. Given the number of horrors you have to shoot on the road—cigarette-vomiting Godzilla Strippers, thirsty cups of coffee, and enough point-awarding meth to satisfy an entire trailer park—the logical endgame would be to kidnap Kurt Russell and his wife.

The trucker conceit goes a long way toward making Truck Stop an unusual take on “moving from left to right while shooting things that are also trying to shoot you.” Your truck moves ceaselessly down the road while enemies and roadblocks come at you, but your path is constrained by guardrails. Navigating this roadway while also dodging aggressors is a tricky dance. The two-step becomes a waltz when you factor in your gunfire, which is controlled with the mouse.

The trashy neon trappings are the selling point here. Adult Swim games too often go for the easy alienation of gross-out humor, but Truck Stop is unusually staid in that respect—notwithstanding the odd peanut-shaped boss screaming, “Eat my nuts!” Truck Stop’s trippy, disorienting sense of speed does an admirable job of evoking the hopped-up state of a trucker who popped one too many NoDoz.

Yeah, fun for the whole two minutes it’s fun.
Then the seizures set in and you find yourself in your garden throwing pills at passing cars.
    No thank you.

    The colors, Duke, the colors!

The crystal meth power-up thing makes me a little uncomfortable, but the gameplay is pretty fun, and I love the visuals.

  4. 1. Nice “Breakdown” reference.

    2. Game seems very Space Giraffe-y. I mean that in both a good and a bad way.

I’m going to pretend my trucker is Stacy Keach in the weird Australian horror film Road Games, complete with a dingo and Jaime Lee Curtis for company.
