The Greenlight Supershow

Developers unite for 13-hour indie game awareness marathon, and you can watch it here

Tomorrow, starting at 10:30 a.m. Eastern time, a coalition of independent developers will be putting on a 13-hour-plus live streaming marathon to raise awareness for their games—and to encourage viewers to help them out. The quasi-telethon, dubbed The Greenlight Supershow, will feature 23 games that are currently awaiting approval on Steam’s Greenlight service. We’ve embedded the livestream below, so come back at the appointed hours and discuss the games on hand in the comments—or you can watch it over on the official Twitch page.

On Steam Greenlight, small independent development studios submit their games for consideration, and the users of Steam, the massive PC games retailer/community, vote on whether or not they’d like to see the game go up for sale. Through some algorithmic voodoo, once a game has gotten enough “yes” votes relative to other candidates, it gets greenlit, ensuring it a spot on Steam’s marketplace once the game is ready to be sold. Theoretically, this allows more games to make it to Steam’s store because the community takes care of the arduous vetting process.

It’s not all good news. Tons of unconventional, promising games have been Greenlit (Papers Please, Riot, Fract OSC, The Stanley Parable: HD Remix) but the Greenlight voting bloc also suffers from groupthink. Just take a look at how many horror games have been given the collective “okay.” Unless your game is caught up in this first-person horror trend or getting some PC gaming press love, it can be hard to get noticed.

That’s why I love the idea of this marathon. It’s a case of developers helping developers. The whole thing was put together by Alix Stolzer of the studio Robot Loves Kitty (whose game Legend Of Dungeon has already been greenlit). And the end result—if the event goes as planned—is that more cool games make it out to the masses.
