Nintendo executive gives impersonal video tour of his giant Animal Crossing house

By Matt Gerardi • June 25, 2013

It seems like everyone but Microsoft is really stepping up their “executives making silly YouTube videos” game. Let’s not forget that sick burn Sony laid on Microsoft with that witty instructional video. And Nintendo has been delivering bizarre internet videos for almost two years with their promotional Nintendo Direct livestreams. Most of it is game announcement business as usual, but occasionally they step up the production and use some movie magic to come up with some weird stuff like this classic scene of Nintendo boss man Satoru Iwata holding bananas…

Iwata Bananas

…or whatever the hell that thing with Luigi is.

Iwata Luigis

Nintendo’s latest is a tour of the massive Animal Crossing: New Leaf house of Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo Of America. As editor John Teti pointed out to me, there’s a sort of charm to watching Nintendo’s stiff executives interacting with its whimsical games. This video starts with an “Oh hello, I didn’t see you there” moment as Reggie exits what I’m assuming is his real-life massive house before starting the in-game tour. Fils-Aime could use some interior decoration tips for his virtual mansion. The first thing you see when you enter is his “Nintendo museum,” a cluttered mess of items from various Nintendo games. From there, we’re led around the Regginator’s home as he opines about each huge and mostly empty wing. We even get to see him roll around on his bed, complete with a sheet emblazoned with his face (terrifying).

The whole thing almost goes off the rails when, in his home gym of course, he makes reference to the “My body is ready” internet meme he spawned several years ago. But Fils-Aime manages to pull it back together by reading every viewer’s mind and showing off what we all came for: His playable sitar. “My sitar skills are legendary,” he declares. He then walks up to his sitar and plays a single note. Legendary.

  1. As a brown person AND a former EA employee I’m just excited to see a video game company executive of color (who even talks to the public!).

And that it doesn’t seem to get a lot of discussion, it’s just how it is.

  2. Andy Tuttle says:

I was actually anticipating seeing Reggie’s real home, I don’t know why it didn’t dawn on me that he would be showing us an Animal Crossing video.

  3. Citric says:

The Reggie Sheets remind me of Legend of Cage.

    I love this video.

  5. Matt Gerardi says:

I love how the first big feature of his kitchen is “a TV that looks like an apple.” Yep. Thanks, Reg.
