The Old Man And The Lake

Cod Of War

In The Old Man And The Lake, the fish fight back.

Sawbuck Gamer is our daily review of a free or cheap game ($10 or less).

There’s a scene in the latest Rambo movie where Troutman’s protegé fishes off the side of his boat. Instead of a rod and reel, this “legend of war” uses a compound bow and his trusty fishing arrows—thankfully not the explosive kind—to catch his dinner. This image of the 66-year-old Stallone murdering freshwater bass with excessive force is the one my brain immediately went to when I started The Old Man And The Lake. It turned out to be a surprisingly appropriate comparison.

For one grizzled old man, a quiet day on the lake turns into something a bit more apocalyptic. But it’ll take a helluva lot more than killer seafood raining down from the sky to ruin this pensioner’s Sunday. (If he could take on the Kaiser’s men at the Somme, he’ll be damned if he’ll let a few thousand homicidal goldfish stop him.)

After trading in a fishing rod for a machine gun, Grandpa must make the 10-mile journey to the lake, constantly strafing fish as they attempt to stop him from reaching the water. There’s not much more to it than frantically waving the crosshairs around the screen, but the difficulty steepens as the fish escalate the conflict. I never got within four miles of the shore. But it’s like Rambo says: “Live for nothing, or die for grilled halibut with peach and pepper salsa.”

So by my count there are now over thirty articles posted this week, if the little mini internet link things count as articles. I’m starting to feel bad for @stakkalee:disqus

I do feel like we’ve been unusually blessed with articles this week. Also, Drew, where did you even find this game?

I feel bad that I’m in a position this week where I can’t read them throughout the day, and just have this huge backlog to get to at the end of the day when everyone is already done commenting…

    Well that exists.

Got to the shore on my first try. Not trying to brag; it just wasn’t that hard.  “frantically waving the crosshairs around the screen” doesn’t help.

If they ever make another James Pond game they should call it Cod of War
