Sonic Gangnam Style

The best and the worst video game-themed “Gangnam Style” parodies on YouTube

By Matt Kodner • August 14, 2013

The other day, my brain played a dirty trick on me. I was reading over my Sawbuck review of The Ruins Of Machi Itcza, specifically the phrase “Pac-Man-style.” For reasons clear only to the part of my brain that I hate, when I reread it for the tenth time, I shouted out, “Oppan Pac-Man Style!” into my empty apartment. You know, like Psy and his whole “Gangnam Style” schtick. I won’t apologize for this. But, it did get me wondering if anyone else made this strange mental connection. Given the internet’s fascination with hastily produced YouTube parody videos, I was pretty sure I would find something. Unfortunately, I did. Here’s the best and the worst (mostly the worst) of what I found.

Pac-Man

This squeaky parody made by the Greek gaming site GameWorld was the first one I stumbled upon. Its foreign origin might help explain some of its strange non sequiturs like, “I was born in Tokyo in early 1980 / Everyone was rocking then but now they’d rather Katy,” and “I am the games industry because my name is weighty / There’s a ghost / Hey, hello matey!” I’d say these lines barely qualify as parody, but hey, parody is hard, especially when you’re working in a foreign tongue. The video didn’t quite catch on, but I was sure there had to be other game-themed “Gangnam” spoofs out there.

Call Of Duty: Black Ops 2

This Black Ops 2-themed video has fared a lot better. It amassed seven million views, no doubt thanks to its Flash animations of terrorists being shot point-blank and truly awful singing. I haven’t played CODBlOps. (It sounds too much like a joke on my last name.) I’ll just assume the creators got most of the plot points right because the parody meticulously retells the story of the game’s single-player mode, which I thought no one ever played.

Minecraft

CaptainSparklez may have done the impossible and created a likeable parody on YouTube. It’s a shot-for-shot remake, filling in the original’s characters with Minecraft buddies. Better yet the lyrics actually work because they talk about the experience of playing the game instead of going, “Hey! This is Minecraft! Oppan Minecraft Style!”

Nintendo

I did not enjoy this video one bit, but let’s see what the YouTube commenters had to say:

i was hoping for more nitendo

nintendo style? haha

*sigh* I remember Link’s former actor from Stupid Mario Bros. Wario gave meh so much nostalgia XD

Doesn’t anyone have anything to say with a little more heft?

This song gives me hope that Nintendo will stay in the hardware business and not become a Third-Party Developer. Besides I think their the number 1 game company and they are to big of a company to do that. Tell me all you wont that Sony and Microsoft are better, But I think if these 3 remaining First-Party Developers actually became Third-Party ones…Not one single game console will be left! Nintendo should stay and I know they have great games that their saving for the Wii U.

I’m not sure I follow, but I still hate that video. Moving on.

Sonic The Hedgehog

Today, I stared into the abyss, and Sonic The Hedgehog stared back—while performing that stupid horse dance. There’s something deeply evil about this clip of Sonic and his dead-eyed friends busting all of your favorite “Gangnam Style” moves in purgatory. Here are some GIFs so you don’t have to listen to the godforsaken song again:

Sonic horse dance Sonic Head shake Sonic Under Amy Sonic Landsharks

Those were all of the parody videos I found. Maybe it would be better if we never spoke of this day again.

    I am going to vomit.

  2. Aurora Boreanaz says:

That Minecraft Style one IS pretty good.  I was expecting an in-game video, but they went through the trouble to fully animate it instead.

    • doyourealize says:

And the lyrics are actually somewhat clever. Maybe this internet thing is okay…

Although you probably should have saved that one for last, Kodner. The next two shattered that aforementioned faith.

That Mario guy can horse dance pretty good, though.

  3. Fluka says:

Oh my god.  Yesterday’s commenters weren’t kidding about sweatshop conditions here at Gameological this week.  If this doesn’t comprise a hostile and dangerous working environment, I don’t know what does.

    It’s gonna be okay, Kodner.

*Calls the Feds on Matt Gerardi.*

    • Matt Gerardi says:

Don’t blame me! This was all Kodner’s idea.

Edit: I have to say, it was actually the Pac-Man video that won me over.

    • Electric Dragon says:

I think this is more like the reverse.

Gerardi: Hey, we’d better put up an article this afternoon. What have you got?
      Kodner: Nothing.
Gerardi: What’s that on your screen then?
Kodner: A bunch of Gangnam Style parodies with computer game characters.
Gerardi: That’ll do. Slap some copy around them, post it up and meet me in the pub in 10 minutes.

It’s official: the Internet is over. Everybody pack up your bags and go home.

i’m kind of enjoying those sonic gifs. out of context, they are great.

    • Matt Kodner says:

in context, they’re so weird. The song manically chugs ahead, but then, hey, there’s Sonic dancing like he’s in molasses and staring up Amy’s skirt.

Don’t tell me you’re going to talk about videogame based Gangnam Style parodies without bringing up FunVideoTV  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OYxfxf3wTLM

  9. MathleticDepartment says:

I would have commented earlier but I blacked out about two minutes in to the Pac Man video and its four hours later now and I’m somewhere on the west coast

  10. Secret says:

The Minecraft one is actually by CaptainSparklez (http://www.youtube.com/user/CaptainSparklez) which was taken down for copyright and what not and someone else re-uploaded it. Miiiiiight want to give proper credit for that

Sonic made out with a human teenage girl.

This is bad, but it’s not Sonic making out with a human teenager.
